Sticky Nights All Painting is about something, be it psychological, philosophical or subconscious. In the paintings of Marisa Purcell, formal qualities engage and challenge the viewers' perceptions about the act of seeing itself. There is a tendency to want to describe or categorise these paintings, however, the works have emerged in an improvisational way, entirely at the mercy of the moment(s) in which they were executed. The current paintings draw from the inner world of the artist - embracing the process of painting itself as a means to extract the subject. Process, temperament and symbols all work in unison through an instinctive knowledge and control of the medium. Sticky Nights is a playful celebration of chance and time passing. Recurring references to elliptical form are suggestive of the internal landscape along with the wonder associated with light. |
