Timbre 2022
Timbre is a collection of paintings that invite the viewer to listen. The larger-than-life size linens are attempting to draw you in and ask for your participation. In these paintings, the colour is an expression of a tone-colour - a response to music.
In these paintings I layer barely perceptible fields of colour on finely woven linen, embracing the tradition of colour as subject. This technique allows each layer to pulse in reaction to each other, like the way different musical voices pulse on the same note.
The ties that bind painting and music are sensory, they recall one another in a way that feels uncanny, yet fundamental.
The very human experience of hearing musicians perform live inspired me to make large scale pictures in the hope of transmitting this affect back the viewer.
